Stem Clubs and Tutoring
I’m Ben Maki.
I’ve been teaching math and science for almost twenty years in the classroom and at outdoor education camps.
I’ve always believed the best way to learn a subject is to get in there and just use it. So that’s what we’re going to do.
Math Club
Math is, above all else, useful-even if you don’t know what for. At math club, we’ll play games, do activities, make stuff and solve real world problems…all with math. Its not a “math class” though. The activities will be hands-on and based on real-world uses of math. I only call it Math Club so we remember why we’re really there.
Clubs are designed to meet you at your level: upper elementary, middle school or high school.
Fraction Nation
Focusing on 3rd-5th grade concepts: Number sense, fractions & problem solving and logic.
Pi-rates
6th – 8th Grade concepts. We’ll be using functions, variables and basic graphing.
The Quadratics
We’ll be using algebra, trigonometry, statistics, calculus, whatever the members are studying.

Technology Clubs
We’re not going to let the robots win. Tech clubs will give students opportunities to learn and practice tech skills in a variety of areas. Clubs will be short term commitments, about 6-8 weeks each.
Coding Club
We’ll be tackling coding challenges and learning how to teach a computer to do all the hard work. Game design, web pages, spreadsheets and whatever language is the most useful for the next project.
Tech Club
We’ll be playing with Arduino and learning about electronics and circuits. We’ll build weather stations and robots and whatever else sounds like fun and just within (a challenging) reach.
Private Tutoring
Sometimes it helps to have a little focused attention. I am available for private and small group tutoring sessions. Get homework help, review for a test, or just get a different perspective on the concepts.
I got you.
